Re: Soviet Aircraft Types in Korea
My question is that the F47's shot down several Mig17s, during the post war
battles.
Just wanted to follow up on the post war air battles.
Number 2:
>From my research about ground attacking fighter planes.
Though the P51 was venerable in the cooling area the aircool engines
suffered a similar loss ratio.
>From talking to other pilots about radial engine AC, they had very large Oil
Tanks and the lines were not that well protected. My anectdotal
investigation seemed to suffer the same fate as the Mustang in ground
attacks. In fact about every account of a radial engine AC being hit in
that area went down in flames and the pilot suffered burns of some sort,
just about every report I have seen. The oil tanks were right behind the
engine in some configuration.
It seemed the reports that P51 pilots got hit but most managed to fly on
before they realized they had to bail, crash or land and with less tramma
from a flaming AC.
Now the A1 through 4 Skyraider I think had these areas protected much
better. Which was designed as a bomber/fighter. In fact the Skyraider was a
good prop fighter that got engaged in a few incidents with Chinese Yak9 over
Hinian Island. Managed to shoot down 2 or 3 before the Corsairs came to
help.
