Re: Soviet Aircraft Types in Korea

Hi, Cookie:

Do you have any info on the NK pilots in Vietnam or in Egypt?

All I have is what I got from the other side.  My understanding is that Kim Il Sung told his pilots to work in pairs, wherein one guy would stay high in hiding while the other fellow would draw out a Yank. The high guy then would swoop down on the unsuspecting prey.  This tactic worked a few times until the Yanks got wise and went after the 'high' guy wuth its own high guy.  The NK commander was among the KIA.

Cho Myong Rok led a group of 'several hundreds' NK pilots and support personnel in Egypt during the Yom Kipper War.  Little is known about these people's work in Egypt.  NK is slient on this affair.  Cho Myong Rok survived and got to meet Bill Clinton in the White House.  Last year, Marshal Cho had a heart transplant and he may outlive us all.

I suppose US intel orgs know all about these two "expeditions".  Any doc out in the open?

North Koreans is that they believed their own propaganda and took it to heart, which cost them dearly while flying in North Viet Nam in 1967-68. (They sincerely believe American pilots were inferior and could easily be shot down. Then the US Navy introduced them to the F-8 Crusader. End of story.)
