Soviet plane types in Korea and NK in Vietnam
Dan:
>Using the F8 Crusader means the NK were involved
>from the beginning of VN. Were they flying Mig17, 19 or 21's?
They flew MiG-17s in 1967 and MiG-21s in 1968.
>Also what happened to all the Bearcats, Tigercats, Corsairs and Hellcats we
>sent the French?
Those aircraft, particularly the F8F Bearcats and B-26 Invaders, were used
by the French in closse support mission from ground bases. However they were
so few that the French never were able to give an adecuate assistance to
ground operations. When France withdrew out of Indochina in 1954, most of
F8Fs and B-26s were given to the recently created South Vietnamese Air Force
(SVAF).
>Is there any data on the airwar between the French and VN?
No, because there was not an ´airwar´: the North Vietnamese had no air force
until 1959, far beyond the end of the Indochina War in 1954, and initially
it was limited to a transport regiment (919th) and a training one (910th)
equipped with cargo planes Lisunov Li-2 (the Russian copy of the C-47) and
prop trainers Zlin-226.
I hope this info answer your doubts.
Regards,
Diego.
