The book you refer to was "The Captains."  As a matter of information, 
W.E.B. Griffin's real name is William A. Butterworth, and he is a Korean 
War Vet.  He was a combat infantryman until they discovered he was a court 
reporter/stenographer and assigned him to Gen. I.D. White as the general's 
stenographer..  Result was he was a very young Master Sergeant.  He went to 
helicopter school at Ft. Riley, graduating as a warrant officer, then was 
with Combat Developments at Rucker.  Thus, you see a lot of his experience 
in the Brotherhood of War Series.

A sidebar is, he also wrote the MASH series under a different pen name.
