To this day there never has been a clarification of what happened with Mahurin, and it is still very sensitive to the USAF. There are a lot of rumors both ways about Mahurin -- one that he gave up everything to them (including a Sabre which was reportedly only lightly damaged) and another that he gave them a hard time and garbage.

They do have photos of the Sabre sitting on the dike of a rice paddy and it doesn't look terribly beat up, but it's only from one side.

He was reportly popular with the Soviets as Mahurin is a Ukrainian name and they claim they felt more comradeship with him than other POWs.
