You are right. The Russians call it "Taran", and many Soviet aces scored
kills by Taran. Sergei Lugansky (who would became CO of the 157th GvIAP,
equipped with Yak-3s) was credited with 37 victories against German planes,
and 2 of them (one Romanian He 112 and one German He 111) were shot down
using ramming in 1942.
I also think that the Top Ace of all times, Erich Hartmann, was shot down at
least twice by ramming in 1942, before to begin his outstanding ace career.
