Weintraub was once a great historian. MacARTHUR'S WAR, sadly, is laden
with errors, errors of fact and errors about the organization of government
and military units and errors in discussing who was responsible for what.
In the end, I suspect that the aging Weintraub allowed too many unqualified
research assistants to draft too much of this book. It certainly does not
measure up to his early stuff but simply marks the slide into blather which
has marked his last several books.
In the book's defense, it was beloved by the standard media, all of whom
seem to have assigned youngsters who had never heard of the Korean War to
review it. The National Public Radio interview with Weintraub was painful
to listen to.
I suspect Weintraub would do well to retire and to spare us further such
embarrassments.
