There is an adittional (and much more earlier) reference to a combat between
Allied and Russian prop driven planes: in April 1945, during the last days
of WW2 in Europe, 2 P-51Ds attacked a couple of "Fw 190s" which actually
were Lavochkin La-7s of the 176th GvIAP, one of them piloted by the XO of
the unit and Top Soviet scorer, Lt.Col. Ivan Kozhedub (62 victories against
Luftwaffe, among them 22 Fw 190s, 18 Stukas and most of the reamining ones
Bf 109s). Kozhedub was forced to shot down both attackers (apparently both
are confirmed by USAAF).
Incidents like that were common, many Soviet armoured units reported to be
attacked by mistake by USAAF planes, and a white cross was painted rapidly
over Soviet tanks and APCs to allow the US aviators to do not misidentified
them with German vehicles.
Just my 2 cents,
Diego.
