Again, the book is laden with serious factual errors, especially in matters
dealing with command relationships and political directives. It is a sad
embarrassment in light of Weintraub's earlier works, most of which are
quite competent.
And MacArthur had only the scantiest connection with Marines in the Second
World War, as King and Nimitz would not allow them to serve in SOWESPAC to
any significant degree. So, no, the Marines really didn't help him to
return to the Philippines.
