Monthly Joongahng (http://monthly.joins.com/) has an
abstract of the presidential archives dating back to Rhee. The archives
were recently uncovered.
Some highlights:
- Rhee and Chiang Kai Sek signed a pact to rekindle
the Korean War
- Rhee's adopted son, a ranger trained in the US,
shot and killed his natural parents and siblings
- Gen. Van Fleet was the main US backer of
Rhee. Rhee bought several hundreds heads of cattle from the general's
ranch in Florida for his "state" ranch on Cheju-do.
- Park Jung Hee wanted military actions to free the
Pueblo but Johnson rejected Park's plea for action.
- Choe Gyu Wha deleted records related to
the students uprising.
It would be nice if we could compare
the Korean and US archives - side by side.
