What would the military purpose of this attack be? There isn't one.
Glen,
Thanks for your detailed comments!
I am glad to hear that the ROK Army could have
mounted a limited attack. And US was correct in not
providing heavy weapons to the South because
Rhee may have started a general war in 1949.
Now, as to the question why Rhee would have
mounted a limited attack in 1950, I thought I explained it
before. Let me explain it again then!
Rhee's regime was crumbling in 1950. He wanted
to save his neck and unify Korea under his rule.
That required an outbreak of a general war with
US support. In order to get Uncle Sam's support,
Rhee wanted the North to attack South.
But KIS was restrained by Stalin not to attack
South first. So what Rhee did was to mount a
limited attack on the North, inducing North to
counter-attack and come down South.
It was like catching a big fish with a bait.
Apparently, KIS fell right into the trap.
The rest is a familiar history.
Does this make a sense to you now?
