RE: Unkown Ace and Napalm
Diego,
Here is everything I know about Pomaz.
Capt. Evgenij Aleksandrovich Pomaz - Initially served with the 494th IAP,
190 IAD as a deputy squadron commander aka squadron navigator (not a
zampolit). By 12 Jul 52, he had transferred to the 256th IAP, 190th IAD as
the Squadron Commander of the 2nd Squadron. He is credited with shooting
down an F-86 on 16 Mar 52 {No F-86 losses this day. An F-80 flown by Capt.
Jasper Newton Owens lost), an F-86 on 13 Apr 52 (Maj. George Vincent
Wendling), an F-86 on 13 May 52 (Col. Walker Mahurin), an F-84 on 17 May 52
(three F-84s shot down or written off from damaged caused by MIGS - Capt.
Chester A. Shaw, Jr., Lt. John C. Trobaugh, and an unknown), an F-86 on 12
Jul 52 (Capt. Patrick M. Ellis). How many of these claims are factual are
anybody's guess. On any of these days, you will find many more claims than
losses. Of interest, Soviet pilots were awarded 1,500 rubles for each shot
down aircraft. This is significant money when you consider that a deputy
squadron commander's pay, either a zampolit or a navigator, was 2,100 rubles
a month. A squadron commander was paid 2,200 rubles per month. That was
quite an incentive to embellishing one's claims.
Additional information on Pomaz. Promoted to Captain while stationed in
China. Given the 190th IAD CO's gratitude (blagodarnost' - almost like
being mentioned in dispatches) on the occasion of Soviet Army Day. Awarded
2,000 rubles on 24 Mar 52 for completing 30 combat missions. Awarded 3,000
rubles on 20 Apr 52 for completing 50 combat missions. Awarded a "Pobeda"
wrist watch by the CO, 190th IAD on the occasion of 1 May 52 (May Day).
Shot down on 13 May 52 by an F-86. Ejected and landed uninjured, three
kilometers southeast of the Myaogou Airfield.

Subject: Unkown Ace and Napalm
Hi, Cookie
I would like to ask you and Dan Blazzer: in the list of the 51 MiG-15 pilots
credited as aces appeared a misterious "Pomaz" (no first name or middle name
known) with 11 kills, apparently he served in the 494 IAP (so I guess he was
in Korea between April-July 1952). Taking into account the poor performance
of the 494 IAP, is unusual that had been an ace with so high score but with
so few things written about him. Do you know something about Pomaz and his
claims (date, type of plane)?
Regarding the matter of the effectivity of the napalm against Chinese
troops, 2 questions: Are there statistics of which service used it more
(USAF, USMC or USN)? What mean the acronym PNG that you use to refer that
Chinese general who accepted heavy losses?
Regards and Thanks in advance,
Diego.
