We retreated through Hamhung. The GHQ 1st Raider Co. They put us on a
southbound plane so we could secure an area for X Corps Hdqs. While were in
Hamhung we talked the guards at the supply depots into letting us have Spam and
bacon, and other food before the blew up the warehouses. It sure beat the C
Rations we had eaten for weeks.

Hamhung?
Hamhung was first occupied by the ROKA Capital
Division. Weeks later, Americans arrived to replace ROKA.
The first live American GIs I laid my eyes
on were 'down to earth' - so to speak. We were
forewarned about the imminent arrival of the Yanks by ROKA officers and
expected a formation of GIs marching in with a band playing, flags flying,
etc.
Instead, I saw two GIs appearing on the hill
in front of my house. Apparently unaware of the many eyes on them, they
squatted down to relieve themselves! The hill was by the Hamhung
Medical College (an army field hospital at the time).
I would love to meet these two chaps - if they
are still around. Does anyone know which outfit (the first to arrive at
Hamhung) they were with?
