John2, the military is very reluctant to notify the next of kin that their loved one was killed by "Friendly Fire." People can accept losing someone when he/she was killed by the enemy while fighting for his/her country, but get very upset (to say the least) when killed by their own people. As a matter of fact, for that reason, Company Commanders seldom report death by friendly fire.
