There has been no question since 1949 that the Republic of China was
anxious to re-invade the mainland and to destroy the PRC.  They were
anxious to do so fifty years back and are anxious to do so today.  At no
time has the ROC felt that it "needed" US assistance.  The US Navy, for
that matter, was inserted into the Straits of Taiwan precisely to keep the
ROC on Taiwan, not to keep the PRC forces from invading Taiwan.

At no time has the PRC had the ability to invade Taiwan.  They certainly do
not have that ability today.

None of this is secret -- read, say, the Washington POST or the New York
TIMES editorial pages in late 1949 to see how strongly THEY called for US
intervention to prevent the ROC from invading the mainland.
