Few people seem to be aware of the fact that the
Golden Triangle (opium country) is controlled by Chiang's troops placed there in
the 1940's to harass/invade China.
Later, Chiang did land division length forces on
mainland China (when and where? I don't recall off the top of my
head), which was eliminated - no anticipated general uprising had
occurred.
Chiang's troops also operated in Tibet trying to
stir up armed insurrections.
I believe there is a book "CIA's Secret War on
China" or something like that.
The bottom line is that Taiwan and the US have been
trying hard to topple Beijing gov for many years.

Who said anything about the ChiComs "fearing" the
ROC? Certainly not I! But, yes, the Chinese simply lack the ability
to project force across the waters to attack Taiwan, while the ROC
possesses adequate resources to land its military forces on the MUCH longer
mainland coast. The ROC believes that there would be a popular
uprising if it landed; the PRC is evidently concerned about this but
feels that it could, by Tianamen-Square ruthlessness, suppress
such.
