Nothing odd. During those times general officer reassignments were
generally made effective 1 July or 1 Jan. (Don't know if this practice is
still in place but may be.) He had known of his new assignment for several
months and decided to return to the US via one of the MSTS (Military Sea
Transportation Service) ships and the one departing Inch'on of 24 June 1950
was the only one in a two month time frame.

I don't have that information.
