Subject: Re: Info on Lt. Burches
Young,
Prof.
Cumings' book (Origins of Korean War, vol.I, p. 534) contains some useful
info on him.
According to Cumings, the correct name is Leonard
Bertsch. He was a Havard-educated lawyer from Ohio. He arrived in S.K.
in early 1946 and served in the US military government as a political
adviser to Arnold & Hodge (as Ist Lt.) He had extensive contacts
with S.Korean leaders and promoted a coalition government of moderates,
including Yuh Un Hyong, in S.K. It is not clear when he joined the
Army. Anyway, it seems he was a good friend of Korea. He stayed in Korea
until 1948.
