Southerners in the Korean War

In one of the Korean war books there are statements to the fact that in the beginning of Special ops most of the officers and enlisted men were from the South. Or this is the way that I interpret that part of the book. It also make me proud to know that us Southern Red necks were needed by Uncle Sam at some time.  If this is scape goating and discrimination then count me in.

Yep, that's good to hear.  I'm a good ol' boy myself, born and raised in North Carolina.  I forgot who said it but during World War II one of the quotes was that a reason why the Japanese
started the war is they were used to seeing the College Boys at UCLA and Harvard.  What they didn't know was that we kept boys locked up in basements in Alabama for just such occasions.

Another interesting thing about Southerners is in general they were the best at being trained to be CTI's (interpreters) for the Vietnam war because of the more tonal nature of Southern speech.  (Have you ever heard the inflections when a Southerner gets "riled-up"?)

The English teacher I had during my Junior year of High School (1999-2000) in the United States*  had a brother that was a CTI in the Vietnam war, and I know another former CTI that took part in Vietnam in Greensboro (North Carolina) who told me the bit about Southerner's being good at these things.

I was basically saying that portraying Southerners as _ignorant_ red necks and blaming them for mistakes in foreign policy is beating around the bush.  It seems to me from what you said they tend to end up fixing the foreign policy mistakes.  (I.E. the people in Special Ops).
