Re: MacArthur's War

Marc Small,

Getting caught using the 7th Marines Sgt Major's typewriter one night while I was corporal of the guard got me the punishment of becoming his typist.  This meant I read every paper that came in or went out.  My concerns for the dislocations between what we were tasked to do, were doing, and were reporting grieved me enough to do a history degree later.

My six years of teaching at UC Berkeley forced me to appreciate academic functions and distinctions far more than I had ever anticipated when I accepted an appointment there in 1972 after they had dropped their ROTC program.  You probably know that our C/S was a Berkeley graduate and took their action gracelessly.  Some "bad mouths" attributed my appointment to this.  We were back on in three years, an interesting story in itself.

I do not know your sources nor a rationale for discounting this work of one of his discipline's most distinguished products.  I will get the reviews of this work
by other historians and share them with you.  Please send me the sources that led you (others?) to your conclusions about this particular work.

Best regards,

Carl Bernard
