Korea -- 50 years ago this week, June 6-12

June 8-9 -- Maj. Gen. Daniel H. Hudelson, former
commander of the California Guard's 40th Infantry
Division, has returned from Korea to retire from the
Army June 8. He says if the communists attack in
Korea, the Eighth Army couldn't "stand up to the
hordes," even with superior equipment. He's "not sure
why we are even fighting."

I am not sure what led the general to make a remark
like this. He was probably upset that a Regular Army
major general was replacing him. If I remember right,
David Hackworth called the 40th ID the California
"Crybaby" division in his book "About Face." I am
certain that the CPV and the nKPA would have been
savaged had they attempted a large scale offensive
against the 8th Army in the 1952-53 timeframe.
