Re: Dan Rather

In 1985 I was worked on DoD initiatives to teach new recruits to read and
write and understand math.
I ws in a DoD seminarlearning about New Look and specs written to Mil Std
63000.
Those that were educated in WW2 were highly valued.
The most important invention of the 20th century was the pump.

If you look at the African American the US Services was the
only place to learn professional management outside of a college.
In all minority ranks after Korea there was a spike of professional
types both Technical and Management.

The interesting thing about the US in war was that we had good Leadership
programs.
The Axis in WW2 had a lot of Leadership problems when the Leader was killed
everything stopped.

Despite that quality of the US Soldier to pick up the ball.
Concepts on how to Fix Something broken were tough even if you were
literate.
70% of the popluation was literate by Vietnam..however, it was most of the
30% who were not Literate were the ones that got DRAFTED.

You can show anyone how to fix something.
You cannot always give a person something to read and get it fixed.

Public Education was modivated by the DoD to have a literate Armed Forces.
Exactly in the same way we have an Interstate highway system....
Airlines, Railroad and many other systems.
Public Education was never intented as a Social Experiment.
But there are a whole lot of people in Politics trying to dumb down the
Public Education system
