I never knew my father was a Republican until I was almost 22
years old.
In 1952 Regular Army soldiers from Texas could
not register to vote in Texas, unless they were actually stationed in
Texas. So when Eisenhower ran for president in 1952, I wrote and asked my father
to vote against him. Daddy was born and raised in the south, and had raised
eight children during the Depression. I had always assumed he was a Democrat,
and this request was really just a reminder. I nearly swallowed my gum when he
told me he had voted a straight Republican ticket ever since he had been voting.
He said he wouldn't change now.
I guess that political persuasion must have rubbed off
on me, as I have voted a straight Republican ticket since 1964. Unless the
Democrats nominate Osama bin Laden to run against Geedubya Bush, this will
probably change at the next presidential election.
