Re: Stars in Korea
James "Maverick" Garner was in Able company of the 5th RCT in 1951. Got his Purple Heart when he was hit in his "rear area".
When in reserve he loved nothing better than a good fight. As to what he was like in combat, I never asked any of the men who knew him back when.
A former mayor of Buffalo, N Y served in the 5th RCT and I met him at a reunion in Buffalo while he was in office. Father Waldie who was known as a combat priest as he did take up arms in a few battles while on the MLR administering to the dying. Father Waldie who died about a year ago also was a paratrooper..
A former Lt. of mine, James Lee ended his time in the army as a 3 star general. Cannot recall anyone else right now who could be considered a celebrity. Cannot remember which movie stars claimed to have served in combat in Korea right now, but their combat stories were proven to be false. A lot of false heroes running round at times.
One congressman I know of, when he says he served in Korea, he does not claim to have been a hero. He admits he was a Red Ball driver.
