Under most circumstances, I agree that Changjin is the historically correct
and respectful name for the reservoir. It is the traditional Korean name,
one that should be reclaimed, and one that should be used by governments, the
media and in new scholarship.
However, the men who fought there made history as well. And they did
it by fighting at what was then being called the Chosin. Calling the
veterans' organization after the reservoir as it was then identified is, in
this instance, historically accurate and not in the least disrespectful.
Changing the name of the veteran's organization to Changjin would, in fact, be
an attempt to rewrite history *and* it would in many ways deny
those men their place in history.
Ed, That is true. What I am trying to say though is that it is never too late to correct history if there was a mistake in the past history. It is no longer necessary to use "Chosin Reservoir" today when we can use the correct Korean name, which is Changjin Reservoir. I now understand how the word "Chosin Few" came about. I thought "Few" was also Japanese, but it seems it was used in the English sense. In any case, I don't think it will be too difficult for the "Chosin Few" group to change their group name to "Changjin Few" or veteran asso. of "Changjin Reservoir".... This is, of course, merely a suggestion not a demand. jk |
