I never saw a Naval Corpsmen "attached to a Marine rifle company" who didn't carry both a carbine and a 45 side arm. In the book "This is War" there is a full page picture of a Corpsman attached to C-1-1. The picture of the corpsman shows that he is carrying both a carbine and a 45. During fire-fights corpsmen were doing what they are trained to do and that's tending to the wounded and not playing soldier.  All the corpsmen attached to my company "B-1-1" were similarly armed.
