There are a few pictures of him in a Mustang.

Probably not a Mustang but a Corsair or possibly an F6F Hellcat. Could have been a SNJ (AT-6 to USAF) which was used to train Navy pilots in WWII. Before he was in WWII he was a baseball player. Joined the Marines after Pearl Harbor. Not sure how long after that tho.
