I remember reading somewhere the Marines made the first "air assault" using
H-19's. As I remember it, in 1952 they landed a Marine company (platoon,
battalion?) about 10 miles behind Chinese lines, stayed a few hours and then pulled the unit out. Anyone have any information on this?
Ed,
Not sure about that, but Marine Helicopter Squadron (HMR) 161 flying Sikorsky
HRS-1's accomplished the first troop carrying mission, Operation SUMMIT, on September 21, 1951, when sixty-five flights of the helicopters carried 244 men of the 1st MarDiv reconn company and 17,772 lbs of cargo to an isolated hill top. It took four hours.
