This is a very good question!
I believe the US objective was the same from the beginning of the war.
Mac/Truman's objective was to roll back communism in Korea.
But Ike ended up with a ceasefire at the DMZ.
(If you look at it from that perspective, it was certainly a failure.)
Rhee was openly calling for unification through war
before the outbreak of the war in 6/50.
And some officials in the Truman administration were
in agreement with Rhee and were also calling for a roll-back or
a preventive war against Soviet Union at the time.
(Well, just compare that with Bush's pre-emptive war theory!
He must have borrowed it from the old Cold War warriors of the 50s)
