Re: Korean War Documentary
Today, I got confirmation that I will be flying to Pusan, South Korea on
November 9, to be a subject in a four hour Canadian Documentary that will be
aired in 2003 in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the cease-fire in
Korea. As some of you know I wrote a few stories on my experiences in Korea.
I believe a chapter in the story that I call "The Longest Day," is among the
reenactments in the documentary. I believe the reenactment has just finished
being filmed and now it is time to go to Korea to be interviewed in several
locations where I served. Hopefully we can get into North Korea.
Some of you may wonder why I named the chapter "The Longest Day,"
because of the D-Day film with the same name. I called it "The Longest Day"
because it was my longest day of continuious fighting. The story starts the
night before the action and my platoon is sent out on a night patrol,
starting early the next morning my platoon crossed a bridge (carrying the
Kimpo-Seoul Road) over the Kalchon Creek (under heavy fire) into Yongdungp'o.
On the Yongdungp'o side we got into a long firefight where many ugly things
happened. Very shortly after that fight we got into another ugly fire-fight
that lasted into the night. The day ends when four of us are sent out on a
patrol and we don't return until after midnight making it my longest day.
Yes, we took many killed and wounded. Some died of wounds because we couldn't
get them help.
It is my understanding that this documentary will be shown in Canada
and France. I hope I can get it to be shown in the USA. Don Gill
