Re: Surrender leaflets
Lee, we went to Kunsan on the British frigate HMS Whitesand Bay. There were
no U.S. Marines with us. There was a squad of Royal Marine Commandos with
us. They were from the 41st Commando Battalion, and they were commanded by
Lt. Pound. All three men killed on that mission were in the U.S. Army. Two
of them were killed on an island just offshore from Kunsan. And one died on
board the ship from wounds received as we withdrew from the beach. He was
buried at sea the next day. One body, that of Cpl. Maines, was later
recovered, and was returned to the U.S. for burial. Lt. Clance's body has
never been recovered.
