The P51 was called the Maytag Messerschmit because
many of its parts were built by Maytag.

I was attacked 3 times from the air. once by a P-51, once by an
A-26 and, one night by what was dubbed "The Maytag Messershmit," which
sounded like a biplane trainer. He threw mortar shells over. No damage that
I heard of.
Gene,
That was probably
the 1920's vintage PO-2 aircraft that continued to heckle UN forces throughout
the war. It was a wooden frame fabric covered biplane bomber, which at one
point in the war was credited with destroying more US fighter aircraft than
MiGs, attacking airfields with its bombs.
