I concur. One of the first problems in one of the areas I deal with -- Perception Management -- is that truth can defeat a lie, but it has to be done before the other side has manipulated the lie to the point that it transcends into myth. These hand-me-down lies are what form the myth and that is usually more than enough to have anyone disposed to dislike the people the myth is focused on to easily believe the worst, even when logic says there is no way it could be possible. 

Having a four man team compile 200,000 names of a "hit list" in a matter of weeks is a good example of someone trying to discredit the US or switch the blame from itself to a "whipping boy".
