Strom also commanded a company of glider troops on D-Day. He was too old to be drafted, but he gave up a judgeship and enlisted. If we can forgive the democrats waving the Hammer and Sickle we can forgive republicans waving the Stars and Bars.

Thurmond deserves credit for what he did in the war. After the war, he was part of a gaggle of right wingers who were attempting to turn back the clock on any civil rights that had been gained by blacks. What he did after 1948 was a disgrace to Americans. Would-be new Senate Majority leader, Trent Lott averred the truth of this. after what he has said about supporting such trash.

The oldest man to go through boot camp at Parris Island was Paul Douglas, then a professor of Economics and 50 years old. He later was wounded on Okinawa and earned the Bronze Star at age 52. And then went on to have a strong career as a Liberal Senator. There are men from all stripes of the political spectrum who were and are war heroes.

Before Know Nothings attempt to paint liberals as hammer and sickle wavers, they really ought to read meaningful references to the reality of the situations that took place back then, and are still occurring today.

I would say that the Know Nothings are fascist and pro-Nazi, but that is better left to those in much higher places than Know Nothings congregate. They are nothing less than anachronistic bigots.
