Re: American Intell in 1950

John K,

>>1) Was CIA Director in charge of analyzing all intell data,
including military intell data, in June 1950? <<
No! The Agency was still a very small organization with most of assets in Europe. Besides, its mission was gathering strategic intelligence, not military intelligence.

>>2) Who was the station chief in Seoul in June 1950? Did he pass away? <<
I have the name somewhere but can't remember where. And would guess he is dead by now, but don't know.

>>3) If US was relying info from S.K. intell agencies at the time, which ones are you referring to? <<
Generally the Higher Intelligence Department (HID) but some information came from ROKA CIC and from ROKN ONI.

>>4) Why was KMAG G-2 was under State Dept. instead of DOD? <<
Because KMAG, like all MAAG units, were under State Department Command & Control. Everyone assigned to a MAAG unit was considered "diplomatic personnel" for as long they were assigned and carried diplomatic passports, not regular passports.

>>5) Wasn't NSA also listening in Korea in June 1950? <<
NSA didn't exist back them. Army Security Agency (ASA) and the Air Force did monitor NK, but only on a more-or-less random, very low priority basis since Korea was not on the U.S. radar scope at the time.
