I stand corrected on that point.
Iwo Jima was a Marine operation, attacked once and taken. MacArthur had no role.

Why did they give him a seperate invasion force in the Pacific?
Was it his group that Attacked Iwo Jima the first time and did not take the island?

We were caught on the Ground in the Philippines. There was no LOGICAL rotation of aircraft or preparation for an attack. The one time we were in the air against the Japanese wiped us out on one large air battle. That is just BAD planning for a Professional Soldier. And bad execution. IIRC The JCS had a war plan for fighting the Japanese in the Philippines. Mac scrapped it and fought it his way, which expedited the Japanese invasion's success. If he had fought it the way that the war plan had delineated, there was the possibility that he could have stopped the initial invasion before it got started.
