Military Preparedness
For some time the List has discussed the lack of preparedness of the
U.S. military at the start of the Korean War. One gentleman described
the economic conditions at the time he enlisted in 1949. In late1948
when I enlisted (age 16) the choice of the "stripped down" military
appeared to be a) garrison duty in the Army, or b) see the world in the
Navy. I chose the latter. It was better than being a stock boy at
Krogers, or loading Nehi cases on a delivery truck in South Chicago. I
don't know of anyone who enlisted during that period that thought of
themselves as future "warriors." I had buddies who joined the Marine
Reserve at Navy Pier in Chicago, who eventually went in at Inchon. But,
I think their primary reason for joining was the Draft (as was those who
joined the Guard Units and other Reserve units). Incidentally, I think
Charlie Rangel (I wouldn't vote for him, however) is correct in wanting
to bring back the Draft. Then the armed forces will not be just another
social support program for young guys with wives and children.
All my best and a healthy, happy New Year to the List.
