Gene,
The six and six was an option between the Korean and Vietnam Wars, but not an option during the Korean War, nor During the Vietnam War.

Don't recall since I volunteered, but a lot of draftees got 6 months active, 6 years reserve. It was those reservists with very little training who didn't last long on the line.

What was the target age?
How were they selected for service? (All had to serve?)
How long did they have to serve?

Thanks,
