Re: 18

I had a friend who enlisted when he was 16. We took basic together. He
couldn't have been much older than that when he was sent Korea. I heard that
he had been killed over there.
I believed this for 30 years. In 1980 I happened to be in his hometown,
Napa, California. I got drunk in the motel bar, and when I came back to my
room, about midnight, I looked through the phone book. I saw his name
listed. Despite the hour, I dialed the number, and he answered the
phone. When I told him that I heard that he had been killed he said he had
been "shot up pretty bad" but he was OK now. I couldn't go to his home in
the shape I was in, but we talked on the phone for about a half an hour. I
left the next morning about daylight, so I didn't get to see him.
Larry, if you happen to see this, I would like to say "Hi."
