Re: Soviet view of the Korean War

Maury,

The loss of Lt JG Jesse L. Brown on 4 December 1950 was due to a Chinese infantry company that did just that. They all laid down on their backs and as he and the rest of his Corsair flight went over they fired ahead of the aircraft. He caught a couple of rounds in the oil cooler, crashed the aircraft and was trapped in the wreckage. Even though his element leader crashed nearby on purpose and then he and the rescue chopper pilot tried to get him out, they failed and he had to be abandoned. They think he either bled to death or froze overnight, but the next morning the Navy hit the wreck with napalm to prevent the Chinese from salvaging it or defacing his body.
