RE: National Guard

I have served, voluntarily , in the California National Guard and in the infantry in Korea, MOS 4740 and 4748. I earned the CIB and some battle stars. In every military assignment, I went where the orders sent me. If they had assigned me to the Oakland Army Base laundry, I would have gone there.

Whenever someone denigrates any comrade in arms because they believe the assignment of that soldier is a cakewalk, I take umbrage. I especially take umberage at those who, for partisan political advantage, denigrate a whole unit of our national defense establishment. Anyone who steps through the door follows the rules. The Second Division Band, for instance, rode shotgun on the division trains - hardly a snap, but I suppose some people thought the piccolo player never had to carry anything heavier. When enlisting, and sometime even when being drafted, your last really free choice is to step forward. I have already been tossed off one web log for vigorously defending my country and my service. I will not suffer fools. Take your crap off this site and attack me, personally, at unclegene@msn.com.

Carl,

Not quite sure what that meant, but it's nice to have a dose of reality!
