I may have mentioned that a year ago, in Las
Vegas, members of my company were awarded the Navy Presidential Unit
Citation. Now, it seems we may be entitled to a cluster on that ribbon. The
Marines were awarded their second NPUC for their gallantry at the Chosin
Reservoir, along with "attached army units." This would probably include my
company, and the 31st Inf. Reg. 7th Inf. Div. We were all in the vicinity
of the Chosin at that time.
I never saw the reservoir, but for all I know it could have
been just beyond the next mountain range from where I was at the time. I have
learned that a patrol from our company once reached it shores.
The problem with making history is you may never recognize the
historic places and events at the time, when you are actually at those places
and participating in those events. You often have to rely on others, who
may not have even been there to tell you where you were, and what you
accomplished.
