A big Texas "Thank You" to Mr. Boone Pickens for his
most
generous donation to the KWP during the Iraq War.
Without
Mr. Pickens' timely donation, the Korean War Project
would
have ceased to exist on April 1, 2003. And a continued
and
heartfelt "Thank You" to Travis Brann, Bob (RIP) and
Ruth
Hammond, the McCormick Tribune Foundation, Charles
Brumback,
John and Lee Dunn, Colonel David Hughes, Curley and
Mag Nai
Knepp, Thomas Radke (RIP), James Twohey, Ken Page

and our many, many loyal contributors who have given
us

1. Editor Notes
==========================================================

A) Welcome and Thanks!

We wish to welcome the several thousand new visitors
to
the KWP web site. At the same time, Hal and I wish to
thank
all of the long term visitors and content contributors
for
the valuable information shared on the site over the
past
eight years!

B) The News

This will be the first newsletter since March 10th as
both
of us have been out of commission. Hal is reviving our
construction business which has been idle for several
years.

My personal apologies to all for neglecting the site
and
news. Since January, I have been experiencing horrible

headaches when using my computer. A diagnosis on
4/11/03
showed that I have cataracts. With contact lenses I am
back
in business and will slate surgery when needed.

C) World Events

The events of the past couple months have reminded
people
around the world of the tender nature of political
relations
among nations and societies. It is our sincere hope
that
sound leadership among nations will prevail.

Events in the Middle East, Iraq, Afghanistan, and the
Korean
Peninsula bring home to most persons who visit the
Korean
War Project a personal memory or sacrifice.

Many of you have a direct connection to deployed
Military
Forces in and around Iraq, Afghanistan and Korea.

Hal and I have watched unfolding events with our
"hearts in
our throats" as televised images and reports come into
our
living room.

We think of the young men and women who have perished
or
become injured while serving. We also think about the
civilians caught in the middle of war and hope for the
best
outcome for them.

The picture at the top of our site reminds us:
"Freedom is
Not Free."

2. This Mailing List - Newsletter and Archives
==========================================================

We try to send twice a month to those of you who have
made email inquiry via our forms on the site. This is
our
most efficient way to attempt to stay in contact.

The Mail List is also our way to get current topics
out as
fast as possible. Not all topics will interest all
persons.

Archives can be found at:

Richard Nixon Library Plans Exhibit on Korean War
Vets Invited to Submit Memorabilia and Artifacts

The Richard Nixon Library & Birthplace in Yorba Linda,

California, is asking our help in preparing a special
exhibition,"The Coldest War: The 50th Anniversary of
the
Korean Armistice.", opening this summer to commemorate
the
50th anniversary of the armistice signing.

The Coldest War and its related programming will tell
the
story of the war, with special emphasis on the work
Americans and Koreans did side by side in fighting,
and
often dying, for freedom.

General Alexander M. Haig, former Secretary of State,
will
keynote the opening conference.

The Coldest War will be a fascinating and absorbing
look at
the war and the time in our history when it occurred.
Features will include parts of the original M*A*S*H
set, on
loan by the Smithsonian, and models hand-made by the
sculptor who created the life-size soldiers in the
Korean
War Memorial in Washington.

The Library needs our help in making this exhibit a
truly
authentic look at what the war experience meant to us,
the
American soldiers who were there.

They are looking for personal artifacts and
correspondence.
Photographs of soldiers with Korean civilians or
photos of
Koreans going about their everyday life before the war
would
be welcome, as would memorabilia such as good luck
charms,
family photos or favorite items that kept you going
under
strains of war.

So search your closet, garage and attic for what you
feel
would be helpful, and you'd give or loan for this
important
presentation, which opens July 25 and closes on Vets
Day,
November 11, 2003.

If you find items you'd like to offer, please e-mail
the
Nixon Library Curator, Olivia Anastasiadis, at:
olivia@nixonlibrary.org

or write her at:
The Richard Nixon Library & Birthplace
18001 Yorba Linda, Blvd.
Yorba Linda, California 92886.

Let her know what you have and she'll reply promptly.

6. Fourth (4th) Signal Bn Yearbook
==========================================================

From: "Sandy Yarbrough" syarb@classicsouth.net
Thursday, March 20, 2003
Subject: 4th Signal Bn

I have gotten a copy of a book that the 4th Signal Bn
put
together while they were in Korea in 1950 - 1951.

I'm more than willing to look up photos for
individuals to
find themselves, family members or friends.

How's the best way to get that information out? I
posted on
the 4th entry.

Thanks for doing this. I just wish my Dad, Frank
Martin, was
still alive to see it and maybe find someone from his
company. I also found out that he was originally in
"B"
Company and then transferred to "C" Company.

Thanks for doing all you have to help this project.

Sincerely,
Sandy Yarbrough

E)"Chief: The Life of John P. 'Pat' Flynn, Jr., Marine
Corps
Warrior,"

By Sean J. Flynn, Ph.D.

I've authored a book that may be of interest to you
and your
readers. It's entitled "Chief: The Life of John P.
'Pat'
Flynn, Jr., Marine Corps Warrior," published by
Sunflower
University Press (Manhattan, KS), 1-800-258-1232,
www.sunflower-univ-press.org.

In addition to service in World War II and Vietnam,
Flynn
flew 62 combat missions in Korea with the night
fighters of
VMF(N)-513. He was shot down and captured by the
Chinese
in May 1952 and held as a POW until repatriation in
September 1953. Much of my book, which profited
greatly from
interviews with Korean War vets, describes Marine Air
interdiction operations in North Korea and life in
Chinese
POW camps.

The book includes photos from Marine air fields in
South
Korea and Flynn's pencil-drawing depictions of POW
internment at Pike's Peak and at two POW camps on the
Yalu
River.

50th
Commemorations.

Comments:

I was in Washington DC for "Memorial Week", in May of
2000,
and attended the Twilight Tattoo on the ellipse. It
was a
moving experience, and I couldn't keep back the tears
when
they asked all the Korean War vets to stand and be
recognized. For anyone going to Washington this year,
DON'T
MISS THE TATTOO. It is held every Wednesday evening on
the
ellipse.

E)50th Anniversary Battle of SAMICHON VALLEY, THE HOOK

A major re-union and commemoration will be held in
July next
to commemorate the 50th Anniversary Battle of SAMICHON

VALLEY, THE HOOK.

I quote from the article advising of the re-union:
"After
successive defensive battles by British Battalions on
a
feature known as THE HOOK in the Samichon Valley, 2
Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment of 28
Commonwealth
Brigade was tasked to to defend THE HOOK. The 7th US
Marine
Regiment was on the left flank and 3 Battalion Royal
Australian Regiment on the right flank. The nights
24 - 26 July 1953 were periods of fierce fighting as
Communist forces unleashed immense amounts of indirect
fire,
followed by numerous human wave attacks as they tried
to
breach UN Lines.

Commemorative activities planned by 2 RAR include an
official welcome reception, a veterans' open day at
Lavarack
Barracks, tours of the 2RAR Museum, battalion sporting

events (boxing, Australian Rules, rugby) a ball and a
dismissal parade for ex members. Unquote
