To find out about your late uncle you might try contacting the skyraider organization and ask if anyone knew him. If some does they might know what outfit he served with in KW and what aircraft he flew.

And, as far as I know, there wasn't any Air Force aircraft like A-1 used in the KW. As for a forerunner to the A-1, I would guess the Republic P-47 of World War Two would come closest but I think the "bomber cabal" got rid of this aircraft since it was a helluva good close air support bird but they were reluctant to spend money on aircraft to support the army ground operations. (Just my personal opinion.)
