Re: SS Merideth Victory--Hungnam evacuation

Dear Mr. Tunison,

Many thanks for your note.  I do indeed want to read your Hungnam account. Congratulations on publication of your book.  Perhaps we can also talk "in person" (by phone -- I live in D.C.).

Right now, I'm working on an article for the Cleveland Plain-Dealer about vets' and others' recent "rediscovery" of the "forgotten" war.  Could I ring you today to find out how and when you returned to your service on the Greer County and decided to write your book?

Regards,
Mandy Katz

I have just finished writing a book about the USS Greer County (LST-799) titled One Ship, Two Wars. The book follows the LST-799 through her service in WWII and Korea. I have written ten or fifteen pages about the Hungnam evacuation in late December 1950, where the 799 was the last ship off the beach the day before Christmas. The most poignant aspect of this part of the book is the effort on the part of the American Military to remove 100,000 Koreans from the sure grasp of the advancing communists. Along with Army artillery units, the 799 took aboard several hundred Korean Christians and removed them to Pusan. Dr. Bong Hak Huang, a Korean physician and Christian, was instrumental in getting the job done.

The book is published by Great Circle Books and should be available by late July.

Subject: SS Merideth Victory--Hungnam evacuation

I am making a documentary film based on the book “Ship of Miracles” by Bill Gilbert.

This film is about the SS MEREDITH VICTORY and the heroic crew who saved 14,000 Korean refugees on one voyage.

If you know of anyone with a connection to this topic, please let me know.

I am looking for people to interview for this film.

Best regards,

RJ McHatton
