Re: Robert Keiser and Kunu Ri Pass

Robert,

The commander of the 2nd Inf Div during the Kunu ri
battle was MG Laurence B. Keiser. Are you related to
him? His son perhaps? Many of the generals from the
Korea War era had sons who served. GEN Van Fleet's
son was a bomber pilot lost during the war.
Eisenhower's son served in the 3d Inf Div, I think.
MG Alan Jones, the commander of the ill-fated 106th
Inf Div in the WWII Battle of the Bulge had a son who
served in the 2d Inf Div and was nearly captured near
Kunu ri. The younger Jones was saved by CPT LK
Truscott whose father was one of Patton's generals
during WWII.

Have you read Roy Appleman's book, "Disaster in Korea:
The Chinese Confront MacArthur?" In the endnotes
that he uses, he cites a letter several times that
General Bradley wrote to him. That letter from
Bradley forwarded a lengthy letter from Lt. Col
Maurice C. Holden, who was the division G3 at Kunu ri.
You can probably get copies of those letters from the
National Archives or perhaps the Army's Center for
Military History. Appleman worked for the center for
years. Billy Mossman, who wrote a volume of the
Army's official Korean War history, also cites these
letters several times in his book "Ebb and Flow."

You might also want to talk to MSG (ret) John Cook.
He fought at Kunu ri and at one time showed me a West
Point ring he said that MG Keiser gave him.

I see a Robert Keiser listed in the 2d Inf Div
association roster. Is that you? Have you tried
contacting other veterans listed in the roster?

My name is Robert Keiser, and I'm looking for anyone
who served with me in Korea, especially if you were
there on 30 November, 1950, or if you know where I can
find any journals, memoirs, diaries, or other
eyewitness acccounts of that day. I'm especially
interested in any writings by Gen Joseph Sladen
Bradley about that event. You can call me at
760.374.2332, email me at seestheday@hotmail.com, or
write to me at PO Box 207, Randsburg CA 93554
