Subject: Useful Russian Aviation
Terms
Harold,
Thanks for the reply. Sounds about like the
"Keystone Kops" approach (a polite term, will not use the uncouth ones but it
involves goats…) most major fights turn into.
Here are some Russian
terms, in their declarative case and with the spelling correct, that you may
want to use.
Para - Pair (section)
Zveno - flight (two
sections)
Ehskadril'ya - squadron (two or more flights)
Polk - regiment
(two or more squadrons)
Diviziya - division (two or more
regiments)
Korpus - corps (two or more divisions)
Vozdushnaya Armiya -
Air Army
Istrebitel'niy - fighter (masculine; "istrebitel'naya" is
feminine)
Shturmoviy - ground attack ("shturmovaya" is feminine)
Razveditvatel'niy - reconnaissance ("razvedivatel'naya" is feminine)
Gvardeskiy xx Polk - Guards xx Regiment
VNOS = Vozdushnoye
Nablyudeniye Opoveshchiye I Svyazi - Air Observation Warning and
Communications
VPU = Vspomogatel'niy Punkt Upravelniya - Auxiliary Command
and Control Post
GSS = Geroy Sovetskogo Soyuza - Hero of the Soviet
Union
ChF = Chernomorskaya Flota - Black Sea Fleet
Plk. =
Polkovnik - colonel
Pplk = Podpolkovnik - lieutenant colonel
Mayor -
Major
Kapitan - captain
Starshiy Leytenant - Senior
Lieutenant
Leytenant - Lieutenant
Mladshiy Leytenant - Junior
Lieutenant
Shturman - navigator
Tekhnik - mechanic
Vedomiy - wingman
(i.e. the led)
Vedyushchiy - lead (i.e. the leading)
That should
help a bit. I'm not totally anal retentive, just too used to seeing things
spelled right! (Actually the way Xiaoming and I hooked up was my sorting out
the Russian terms and names for his book!)
