One thing I must say I enjoy is the fact that most of you guys were THERE -- and therefore I am fascinated to see all of the different opinions about the war, then and now. Too many people who have great opinions -- and share them all too frequently -- never served anywhere (guess that what makes them experts).
I don't know, Cookie, but we're not a military dictatorship. We're not even Turkey. Also, we haven't had another great war. We had the draft in Korea and in World War II, and we also had it in Vietnam. However, we don't have it now.
I know of at least one instance where buddies were not allowed to visit the graves of their fellows who fell in battle. It was in E.B. Sledge's _With the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa_ (1981 Presidio Press). Also G.H. Bidderman's 2000 _In Deadly Combat_ talks about families being the reason to fight. Moreover, these families have lost voters and their children, voters who have paid the ultimate price. I don't think they went there to hurt their families...
