However, it was McCarthy who leveled the charges about X number of Communists working in the State Department, but lost his credibility when he couldn't provide the same number every time he made the statement -- 57 one time, 205 the next. Most people, however, ignore the fact that when they finally published the VENONA reports from NSA the State Department WAS riddled with a number of Soviet agents, such as Alger Hiss. But in the context of the movie this guy was a bumbler whose Communist agent wife was going to be the real power behind the throne, until she finds out her perfect assassin is her own son.
