He was a cantankerous guy, at times.
In his oral biography, Plain Speaking, he said to the author, Merle Miller,
"They say I was ambitious. I never was ambitious. If the only thing
I'd ever done in my life was be the best damn battery commander I could be,
I'd have settled for that."
But when he spoke of firing Gen.
MacArthur he said, "I fired him because he wouldn't respect the authority
of the President .... I didn't fire him because he was a dumb SOB, although
he was, but that's not against the law for generals. If it was, half to
three-quarters of them would be in jail."
With a Commander-in-Chief who thought
like this it is no wonder we didn't win the war.
